Transformation of Dermatology through Digital Dermatopathology: Practice Opportunities and Challenges
Description
The presentation discusses the implementation of digital dermatopathology across multiple practice sites in Rochester, Arizona, and Florida, focusing on stakeholders' perspectives, including dermatopathologists, clinicians, and support staff. A mixed-method study over three years evaluated the transition from traditional microscopy to digital pathology, examining metrics such as turnaround times for specimen accession and diagnostic reporting. Results indicated minimal changes in case volumes and slight increases in image creation turnaround times, but generally positive perceptions regarding efficiency and accessibility. Most stakeholders reported high confidence (97%) in using digital pathology, partly due to easy access to prior patient cases, which enhanced collaboration across sites. Concerns were raised about screen time and job security among support staff, yet many found their workflow improved due to reduced need for slide retrieval requests. While some limitations, like the inability to perform certain microscopy techniques digitally, were noted, overall acceptance of digital pathology was high, with participants feeling it enhanced patient care and communication. The study highlights that transitioning to digital systems can be beneficial for both productivity and workplace satisfaction.
