PRP, Mesotherapy, and Botulinum Toxin for Non-Scarring Hair Loss
Description
The lecture discusses the use of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), mesotherapy, and botulinum toxin for treating non-scarring hair loss, particularly androgenetic alopecia and alopecia areata. PRP, derived from a patient's own blood, is rich in growth factors that may enhance hair density by promoting follicle health. Evidence suggests it can lead to a significant increase in hair density, especially with a monthly injection schedule during the initial treatment phase. Combining PRP with minoxidil may also enhance outcomes. For alopecia areata, PRP appears potentially more effective than triamcinolone, showing promise in prolonging remission periods despite being cost-prohibitive and not covered by insurance. Mesotherapy, using systemic agents like dutasteride and minoxidil, offers targeted drug delivery options, though dutasteride is preferred due to its longer half-life. Common side effects are generally mild and resolve quickly. Lastly, the utility of botulinum toxin, while showing some positive outcomes, remains inconclusive and requires standardized protocols for effective application. Overall, more long-term studies are needed to determine optimal frequencies and efficacy of these therapies.
View moreConclusions
- Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is effective in increasing hair density relative to placebo for androgenetic alopecia (AGA).
- Monthly PRP treatments may improve hair density more than less frequent treatments.
- Combining PRP with topical minoxidil enhances hair density and patient assessment outcomes compared to PRP alone.
- PRP shows potential as an effective treatment for alopecia areata, possibly providing longer remission than traditional treatments like triamcinolone.
- Mesotherapy via dutasteride appears to be a promising treatment option for AGA due to its targeted delivery and reduced frequency of administration.
- Botulinum toxin (BT) may increase blood supply and modulate fibroblast activity, but evidence for its effectiveness in hair loss treatment remains limited and conflicting.
- Long-term studies are needed to optimize treatment protocols including maintenance frequencies for PRP and mesotherapy.
