Forever Chemicals and Human Health: An Introduction to PFAS for the Dermatologist
Description
Dr. Anika Belzer, a dermatology resident at UCSF, presents on the impact of PFAS (perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances), commonly known as forever chemicals, on human health, especially in dermatology. PFAS are widespread synthetic compounds found in various industries, including personal care products, leading to constant human exposure through inhalation, ingestion, and skin absorption. The presentation outlines the history of PFAS, including early health concerns noted by manufacturers and studies indicating health impacts since the 1960s. Notably, PFAS exposure has been linked to disorders such as hyperlipidemia, thyroid disease, autoimmune conditions, and various cancers, including testicular and kidney cancers. The effects on dermatological conditions are discussed, highlighting potential associations between PFAS exposure and inflammatory skin diseases like atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. The alarming find of PFAS in nearly all tested personal care products raises concerns for dermatologists regarding skin health and product ingredients. Dr. Belzer stresses the need for further research to understand the implications of emerging PFAS compounds on skin diseases, given the shift away from regulated legacy PFAS, and calls for greater awareness among clinicians to effectively advise patients and promote public health.
View moreConclusions
- PFAS are pervasive and persistent in the environment, leading to widespread human exposure.
- Individuals encounter PFAS through inhalation, ingestion, dermal absorption, and maternal-fetal transfer.
- PFAS exposure is linked to immune dysregulation and potential oncogenesis, including skin-related cancers.
- A significant amount of existing research focuses on legacy PFAS, such as PFOA and PFOS, with less data available on emerging PFAS.
- There is a substantial need for further research on the effects of PFAS on cutaneous diseases and overall human health.
