Boards and Beyond

Description

In this session led by Rebecca Deffner, assistant professor at Tufts Medical Center, the focus is on preparing for and navigating the aftermath of board certification in dermatology. The discussion begins with an overview of the board exam process, emphasizing the requirements for taking the exam, which include completing an ACGME-accredited residency and passing four core dermatology exams. Deffner reassures participants about the exam structure, including the format and types of questions, advocating for a strategic study approach that prioritizes understanding over memorization.

The session transitions to the importance of being a board-certified dermatologist, outlining the many benefits that come with certification such as professional recognition, enhanced career prospects, and patient trust. Deffner explains the ongoing requirements for maintaining certification, known as Maintenance of Certification (MOC), which includes completing CME credits and self-assessment evaluations through the Certlink portal instead of a traditional exam every ten years.

The session then introduces an accomplished panel of dermatologists who will share their diverse career paths post-residency, highlighting strategies for career growth, maintaining job satisfaction, and navigating the evolving field of dermatology. The goal is to assist residents in designing fulfilling careers while avoiding burnout and fostering a commitment to the specialty.
